Washington, D.C.

A symbol of democracy the world over and the seat of American government, Washington, D.C. confronts visitors with stirring icons and monuments at every turn. This sparkling self-styled city on the Potomac River is full of marble and light, with beautiful landscaping touches and centuries-old architecture. Built on top of former swampland, Washington was deliberately designed into quadrants, with the US Capitol at its hub. Its many unmissable sights provide unparalleled access to the workings of government, internationally famed museums with priceless exhibits, and the cultural and spiritual foundations of the city and the nation.

  • Refined New American cuisine made from organically grown ingredients – including the coffee and chocolate.

  • Live arthropods scamper and creep in this section of the Museum of Natural History – some can also be held (see National Museum of Natural History).

  • The cemetery has a great diversity of graves and mausoleums in a Victorian garden setting. Its Gothic Revival chapel and the Van Ness Mausoleum are on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Inspired market-driven menus in a relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen prepares a four- or five-course fixed-price menu, grounded in classic Italian cuisine but with a contemporary focus.

  • A fixed-price menu of the finest Italian dishes using fresh, in-season ingredients.

  • A pub-style restaurant with great hamburgers and seasonal entrées. Oyster bar in season.

  • Old Post Office Food Court

Pizza, sushi, bagels, ice cream, and cookies are sold in this interesting food court.

  • A Romanesque revival skyscraper completed in 1899 now contains shops and a food court.

  • The view from the tower here is among the finest in the city. A popular food court and shops draw hordes of visitors.

  • Old Post Office Pavilion

This small downtown indoor mall has a number of boutiques and specialty stores selling gifts, collectibles, leather items, video products, and stationery and cards. Ticketplace, with discount tickets for many same-day performances (see Discount Tickets), is here. The food court on the lower level is extremely popular.
