  • Café Mawonaj

Loved this little place! Great food, friendly staff, great atmosphere..and the music was fab. Location might look quite scary, but don't fear! This is a great community, with great people. Café Mawonaj is a culinary and cultural oasis located in Washington, D.C.'s famed Shaw neighborhood. Specializing in Pan-African, Caribbean, and Soul Food delights, Café Mawonaj offers a menu that will make your mouth water. In keeping with the definition of Mawonaj- "resisting oppression", dishes bear the names of such historic figures as Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Lumumba, and Nelson Mandela. There is something to satisfy every palate, including a variety of vegetarian and vegan specialities.

Just as flavorful as the food is the ambiance of this vibrant space. Luscious red, orange, and yellow tones set the mood. Your eyes will delight in the exquisite paintings and carvings, while your ears are tantalized by lively music.

In addition to the great food and atmosphere, Café Mawonaj patrons enjoy a variety of positive, uplifting social events. Live performances, poetry open mic, and independent film screenings are but a few of the restaurant's weekly events.
