A symbol of democracy the world over and the seat of American government, Washington, D.C. confronts visitors with stirring icons and monuments at every turn. This sparkling self-styled city on the Potomac River is full of marble and light, with beautiful landscaping touches and centuries-old architecture. Built on top of former swampland, Washington was deliberately designed into quadrants, with the US Capitol at its hub. Its many unmissable sights provide unparalleled access to the workings of government, internationally famed museums with priceless exhibits, and the cultural and spiritual foundations of the city and the nation.

Loved this little place! Great food, friendly staff, great atmosphere..and the music was fab. Location might look quite scary, but don't fear! This is a great community, with great people. Café Mawonaj is a culinary and cultural oasis located in Washington, D.C.'s famed Shaw neighborhood. Specializing in Pan-African, Caribbean, and Soul Food delights, Café Mawonaj offers a menu that will make your mouth water. In keeping with the definition of Mawonaj- "resisting oppression", dishes bear the names of such historic figures as Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Lumumba, and Nelson Mandela. There is something to satisfy every palate, including a variety of vegetarian and vegan specialities.
Just as flavorful as the food is the ambiance of this vibrant space. Luscious red, orange, and yellow tones set the mood. Your eyes will delight in the exquisite paintings and carvings, while your ears are tantalized by lively music.
In addition to the great food and atmosphere, Café Mawonaj patrons enjoy a variety of positive, uplifting social events. Live performances, poetry open mic, and independent film screenings are but a few of the restaurant's weekly events.

This is a must see for any currency or stamp fans. It's free, but it isn't open every day. There may be additional new restrictions as are in place with the mints now, so call EARLY-I mean like more than 6 months in advance.

From the multistory atrium lobby to the remodeled rooms, this hotel charms. It is steps from the subway's Metro Center so it is easy to get anywhere in the city.

You have to have cocktails at sundown on the Sky Terrace of Hotel Washington on Pennsylvania Avenue. It basically offers the best view across the city bar none - as well as being 1 block away from the White House, the Monument is straight ahead, and you can see all the way to the Pentagon and the Lincoln Memorial, as well as The Mall. You can't really beat seeing all the main Washington monuments in one sitting!

The Inn at Kelly's Ford is located about 65 miles southwest of DC and is owned by the former partners in La Quinta in Palm Desert, CA. The inn offers a five star French chef, 16 unique suites and cottages, plus an equestrian center, canoeing and flyfishing on the Rappahannock River. It's a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, but yet close enough to be very accessible to it all.

I love your guide book. Please be sure to include the New National Harbor - www.nationalharbor.com - the latest and greatest attraction in the National Capitol Area (DC/MD/VA) - a new entertainment capitol, booming off the banks of the Potomac River, in National Harbor MD - rising to be the largest entertainment venue on the East Coast and upon completion, second only to Las Vegas in the U.S.
Likely you've heard, just wanted to be sure you include my favorite destination and I live here! The way I rave about it, you'd think I worked there.
A "Must Do" not only for the world's business and leisure travelers to our Nations Capitol, but just as much for the locals. Whenever I am there, I feel as though I've gotten off a plane and gone somewhere else - away from home, and it's here - centrally located to DC, MD and VA.
Kudos to Milt Peterson of the Peterson Companies!

We stayed recently at the Omni Shoreham
hotel which is situated near the Metro Zoo
stop, and easy access to all locations.
Old and distinguished, "rather like myself",
has played host to Presidents ,the Beatles,
and was a location in the film the Pelican Brief. Also i was informed by immigration on arriving, that there was a ghost on the eighth floor, although i did not venture up there.
Anyway getting on, but still quite grand, fine breakfast, "we ate out on other occassions",
and a nice array of restaurant;s outside the hotel, everything from Thai to Macdonalds.
And the hotel is situated in Rock Creek Park,
a huge expanse of green which i didn't have the time or energy to explore.
Go there and have a nice day.
