  • 2. Madam’s Organ

For years this Adams Morgan fixture has defined the middle-of-the-road club scene in the city. Live music and dancing. Their slogan is “Where the Beautiful People go to get ugly.”

  • 3. Chi-Cha Lounge

A touch of the exotic – such as a hookah with apple-juice-soaked tobacco – but mainly a comfortable bar with live jazz, and exceptional snacks. Chi-cha is a kind of Latin American beverage.

  • 4. 9:30 Club

Edgy, creative live music by some of the best national bands and performers, in a straight stand-up-and-play atmosphere. The young crowds are boisterous and know their music.

  • 5. The Improv

The local establishment of the chain of comedy clubs books some outstanding talents. The restaurant serves a full menu.

  • 6. Birchmere

Billing itself as a “music hall,” the Birchmere has continually presented the very top folk, country, blues, bluegrass, and, recently, swing bands. Good snacks and a full bar.

  • 7. Brickskeller Inn

A relaxed bar with hundreds of brands of beer. They sponsor tastings and events.

  • 8. Zanzibar on the Waterfront

This large club overlooking Washington Channel is the place to be for African-Americans and Latinos. It’s far from segregated: if you can dance, you’re welcome.

  • 9. Habana Village

The dance hall is packed with patrons working out to salsa, merengue, and tango music.

  • 10. Nation

This vast warehouse draws crowds of serious partygoers. There is a rave on Friday nights, and a high-energy gay dance on Saturday.
